Thirteen-year-old Nelly has just moved to Salem, Ohio, a Quaker town with many who support the anti-slavery cause.

Her family joins the Underground Railroad, using the secret room Nelly discovers. When she overhears a plot to tar and feather her father, the new editor of the Anti-Slavery Bugle, she realizes there are enemies even in Salem. Nelly has a chance to fight back when she joins in a rescue, but she learns the hard way that the rescued girl isn’t really free…

Threats against her father stir Nelly to plan retaliation.

Or will her faith teach her a better way?

Author

KAREN’S PASSION FOR HISTORY BEGAN AS A YOUNG GIRL and led her to complete a copy of an early Ohio settler’s diary in her senior year. After earning a bachelor’s degree cum laude in English and Education, she became an Air Force wife, and over the course of nine years lived in places as far away as Labrador. Seeing new lands gave Karen a window on regional and national differences, and confirmed an appreciation for her own Ohio roots where she and her husband settled and raised their family.

Karen’s books weave real characters and actual events into exciting stories with Christian values. She writes historical novels for young readers, finding inspiration in Ohio’s many history-rich towns. As part of her desire to interest children in history, she visits schools as “Grandma Sarah,” a beloved character in her pioneer novels.

Rife with abolitionists as well as slave catchers, the story moves quickly with plenty of dangerous situations based on actual events of the early 1850s. Secrets in the Sky Nest is a memorable and thought-provoking novel for middle-grade readers.” Alison Gibson, Director, Union County Township Public Library, Ripley, Ohio

“Intersecting history and imagination is vital for middle school readers. Karen Meyer writes inspirational stories, teaching life skills in her latest novel, Secrets in the Sky Nest. The tragedy behind the Underground Railroad is a story children need to understand. The lesson of children responding to injustice weaves throughout the book.” —Barbara Anne Waite, author of Elsie, Adventures of an Arizona Schoolteacher and The Colour Box
