Meet Willy Mason and Charlie Coville. Willy’s father is blind and lame and unable to work, so Willy must help to provide for his small family. But who will hire such a young, malnourished boy? Charlie, the doctor’s son, lives in a mansion with gardeners, cooks, and maids. He cannot work or enjoy his family’s wealth and position, for he is lame and suffers from constant pain.

This short story is a powerful demonstration of determination, loyalty, and trust in a sovereign God. When most view loss as hardship, Willy and his family see it as part of God’s love and faithfulness. Most endearing is the relationship between Willy and Charlie. Charlie has deep questions about God and eternal life. He is troubled that he can’t understand Willy’s personal relationship with Jesus—his simple but robust faith. He would give anything to know Jesus the way Willy does, but something is blocking his way.

I have learned more about trusting God during difficult times in this short story than from any other book. It teaches what it means to be poor in spirit but rich in the kingdom of God; to mourn and be deeply comforted by God’s surprising blessings.

This story can be read to children of all ages, especially to those with questions about salvation and the sovereignty of God. If you are looking for an admirable role model, you will be talking about Willy for a long time to come. Of all our Lamplighter books, I would place this in the top ten!
