About the Author

J. C. Ryle (1816–1900) was ordained in 1842 to the ministry of the Church of England and served country parishes in Suffolk. He served as rector of Helmingham from 1844 to 1861 and vicar of Stadbroke from 1861 to 1880. He was appointed as the first bishop of Liverpool in 1880. His writing continues to influence many today, especially his highly readable Expository Thoughts on the Gospels and his spiritual classic Holiness.
