What are the signs of sincerity?
First, if a man love the light of the word and come to it that his deeds may be made manifest (John 3:21).
Second, if he be obedient in the absence as well as in the presence of lookers-on in secret as well—yea, and more—than in public (Matt. 6:6; Phil. 2:12). Not only when God makes His presence manifest by His judgments, but even when He seems to be absent (Ps. 78:34).
Thirdly, if he cleave fast unto God in adversity as well as in prosperity (Job 1:8–11).
Fourthly, if he have a care of all God’s commandments, even of those which seem to be least (Matt. 5:19).
Fifthly, if he abstain from all appearance of evil (1 These. 5:22).
Sixthly, if he neither cover nor excuse his sins, but confess them and forsake them (Prov. 28:13).
