Description

"There is no study of the Catechism quite like this one." - excerpt from Chad Van Dixhoorn's Preface

John Thomson’s Explication offers a commentary on the Westminster Shorter Catechism that is approachable by scholars and families alike. Each question and answer of the WSC is listed along with a number of sub-questions which seek to unpack and elucidate the details of the WSC’s questions. A treasure trove for pastors and parents, Thomson’s Explication delivers unique insights into one of the crown jewels of the Reformed Catechetical tradition.

Endorsements

“The most important early American Presbyterian you have never heard of, full of the humble spirit of Christianity, missionary zeal, and love for biblical truth as expressed in the confessions; a helpful and timely resource.”
—Todd M. Rester, Associate Professor of Church History, Westminster Theological Seminary

“If, like me, you’ve never heard of John Thomson, you’re in for a treat. On its own, Thomson’s commentary is full of profound and relevant truth. But Fix’s introduction is a terrific summary of the early days of American Presbyterianism to which Thomson contributed significantly. Excellent for group study or personal enrichment, this book is an outstanding gem of Reformed piety.”
—Michael S. Horton, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California

“S.A. Fix has done the church a great service by not only bringing Thomson’s neglected work into the light of day, but by providing such a learned and illuminating introduction to Thomson himself. Thomson’s Explication of the Shorter Catechism is a masterful example of orderliness, comprehensiveness, and eighteenth-century Old School piety. Both Fix’s introduction and Thomson’s commentary deserve careful reading and re-reading.”
—Kevin DeYoung, Senior Pastor, Christ Covenant Church, Matthews, NC; Associate Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte, N.C.
