Concept in Practice!
Y'all... I cannot recommend this book enough! It has actively reshaped the way I approach my study time. It has been encouraging, convicting, and enlightening. David W. Saxton does a tremendous job at presenting the immense value of biblical meditation in the Christian life.
Here are some worthwhile quotes:
"No one is so worthy of our undivided concentration as the Lord, and no material calls for our total attention as the eternal words of life."
"Meditating and spending time with the Lord is like a good meal - it takes time to prepare and time to enjoy. Many Christian devotions resemble a person who is wolfing down a burger while driving on the freeway. However, our time with the Lord should look more like a couple who enjoy each aspect of a seven-course dinner."
Saxton does a great job bringing argument after argument from many Puritan preachers and writers to bear on this topic. In fact, one thing to note is that Saxton tends to double up on a topic and will often utilize several similar quotes as he makes various points. I don't see this as a bad thing in this work since it quite literally puts into actions the vary concepts of this book: the careful, intentional dwelling upon a subject again and again so we can grow more and more. The final two chapters in particular gave practical (and convicting) advice toward devoting our life to more of God's Word.
I am incredibly grateful to the Lord that this work exists!
