Special Providence for Anxious Souls

Like his Puritan colleagues, Sedgwick was a wise observer of providence. In "Providence Handled Practically," he shows how the overruling hand of God should be considered as it comes to bear on the life of the Christian and the church. After briefly explaining the words of Matthew 10:29-31, he distinguishes between God's general and special providence. Then follows an extensive discussion of the practical use of this doctrine. The author's Thanksgiving sermon, entitled "Haman's Vanity," which was preached before the House of Commons is added as an appendix to this work. Here, Sedgwick draws a parallel between Haman's plot to decimate the Jews and a Royalist plot that was hatched in London to seize the Parliamentary leaders.

This edition has been edited for modern readers and has an introductory essay by Joel R. Beeke and Matthew Winzer.

Read it, pass it along to a friend, and be comforted by the God who promises to never forsake the works of His own hands.

Faith Seeking Assurance

It is not uncommon for professing Christians to question the genuineness of their faith. In seasons like this, they can wonder whether it is even possible to know for sure if they are in a state of saving grace. In this book, Anthony Burgess shows that Christians not only can come to an assurance of their salvation but should pursue it. Burgess provides helpful advice for avoiding a presumptuous spirit while developing a humble confidence in grace. Here is a book that will help you understand the marks of grace and avoid some common abuses associated with self-examination. Read it with an open Bible and a prayerful heart, looking to the Holy Spirit as your faith seeks assurance.

Holy Meditation

True meditation is not emptying the mind, but filling it. And everyone meditates on something.

The Puritans viewed meditation as essential for spiritual growth and effectiveness in spiritual duties—a crucial link between hearing, believing, and living God’s Word. Proper meditation cultivates discernment, deepens repentance, and fosters devotion.

Instructing us in occasional meditation and set meditation, this modernized version of Thomas Manton's work on a crucial spiritual discipline helps believers discover the transformative effect of biblical meditation on the mind and heart.
