Description

Although Christians must be willing to stand up for what is right and true within the church, they also must take the apostolic warning seriously—“that there be no divisions among you” (1 Cor. 1:10). In The Scandal of Church Divisions, James Durham helps us discern what division is, the causes which breed and foster it, and the evil effects which ordinarily flow from it. He then proceeds for the greater part of the treatise to address our duty in reference to division and the suitable remedies aimed to restore unity among several areas of discord. Now presented in modern English, Durham’s classic treatment on divisiveness can be used to edify a new generation of peacemakers who join their prayers and efforts with that of the great Head of the church, “That they all may be one” (John 17:21).

Endorsements

"James Durham, writing in the context of divisions in the seventeenth century Scottish church, gives a masterful, perhaps unsurpassed, answer to that question. . . If Durham’s advice was listened to, Christ’s kingdom would be immeasurably blessed.
—Donald John MacLean, president of Westminster Seminary UK

“Although this book is old, it is now, remarkably, even more necessary and relevant than when it first appeared, and, with that in mind, it is important to note that it only gains by being painstakingly recast in clear and contemporary language.”
—Kenneth Stewart, minister of Stornoway Reformed Church, Stornoway, Scotland

“James Durham was a towering figure in his own day, and he remains a writer of enduring importance. . . Here is a work worthy of the attention of all those who love the Lord and His church and who wish to remove and avoid any scandal that could cast a shadow on the Bridegroom or the bride.”
—Chad Van Dixhoorn, professor of church history and theology, Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte
